Stages

What Stages are, how they differ from lessons, and how to prepare for and pass them.

Written by Rhys

Stages are skill checkpoints in Melodics. There are 15 per instrument, and they get progressively harder. They exist to test what you've learned – not to teach you something new.

Stages vs. lessons

Lessons are where you practice and build skills. Stages are where you test them.

You can replay lessons as many times as you like to improve your score or get comfortable with new material. Stages are different – they're checkpoints you work toward and then pass. Each one targets specific skills and passing is roughly equivalent to earning at least three stars on a lesson.

How Stages unlock

Stages unlock in order, one at a time. You need to pass a Stage before the next one becomes available.

Even if the early Stages feel easy, it's worth playing through them rather than looking for a way to skip. They're a good way to find your baseline, get familiar with the format, and confirm your foundations before things get harder.

Getting ready for a Stage

Each Stage has three progress dials that fill up as you play. To fill them, complete the Stage Warm-ups for that Stage, then play lessons and songs at the same Grade.

When all three dials turn green, you're ready to attempt the Stage.

Example: To prepare for Stage 4, start with the Stage 4 Warm-ups. Then play Grade 4 lessons and songs until all three dials are green. Once they are, take on Stage 4.

If you don't pass a Stage

You can retry as many times as you need to. If you're hitting a wall, the best approach is to go back to the Stage Warm-ups or Grade lessons rather than forcing retries. Getting comfortable with the underlying skills usually makes the Stage itself feel more manageable.

Rehearse: You can also jump into Rehearse – a space to practice the Stage. Set loops and repeat sections to build your skills before tackling the Stage again.

FAQs

Can I skip Stages if the early ones feel too easy?

Stages unlock in order, so skipping isn't possible. Think of the early ones less as starting over and more as finding your edge – even experienced players often find value in working through them.

Do Stages affect my Stardom?

Playing the lessons and Warm-ups you use to prepare for a Stage earns you XP, which contributes to Stardom. Stages themselves are a separate measure of skill level.

What happened to Trophies and Records?

Trophies and Records were retired as part of the update that introduced Stages. Stages and Stardom now cover what those features were tracking.
